What is Driver CPC?
The driver CPC (Certificate of Professional Competence) has been introduced across the European Union to maintain high driving standards and improve road safety.
The driver CPC for LGV drivers was implemented on the 10th September 2009.
Existing drivers who already hold a vocational licence on the 10th September 2009 are exempt from holding a driver CPC for 5 years and are classed as having acquired rights.
New drivers acquiring a vocational entitlement (C1, C1+E, C or C+E licence) after the 10th September 2009 will have to obtain an initial CPC in addition to their licence.
The driver CPC requires all professional lorry drivers who drive vehicles over 3.5tonnes and hold a vocational license at the implementation date (acquired rights) to complete 35 hours of periodic training every 5 years. Drivers with acquired rights will have until Sept 2014 to obtain their drivers CPC. The training is by attendance only and there are no exams or tests to pass.
Upon completion of all 35 hours of approved periodic training drivers will be issued with a DQC (Drivers Qualification Card) which will be mandatory to carry once issued.
A driver CPC lasts for 5 years and is renewable for the rest of the driver’s professional career.
No driver CPC in Sept 2014 = No entitlement to drive.
